"Should I tell?"
The wall stands silent.
The wall stands silent.
" I know, I know! It is not my secret to reveal. But some argue that it is. Some argue that it is the right thing, the good thing, to rid the town of those involved. But there are those who argue that I should be killed for this crime. What should I do?"
Hester turns as Pearl wails.
"I know dear child, dear elf, I know. It is not my secret. But it is. It is a secret kept by both of us, mine the harder to keep. Does it do him more good that his name remain unblemished, or does it do him harm? Tell me child, what do I do?"
She lifts Pearl and holds her, rocking.
"What do I do? What do I do?" Hester mutters as she rocks Pearl. Only when Pearl has fallen asleep does she set her down again. Hester walks over to the wall and rests her head against it.
"Please answer me, as only you can, what should I do? Pearl lies sleeping, the product of this sin. Should I reveal all so my child will have a father? Or should I keep his secret safe and let him decide. When he asked me to reveal all, speak his name, I was not sure. 'Be not silent for any mistaken pity or tenderness for him (pg. 63).' Did he want me to say it? Or did he say that in front of the village, knowing I would not speak? I'm so confused!"
At that last word she slams her hand against the wall. Pearl awoke with a cry. Hester turned to comfort her, all thought of the walls answer forgotten.
